A Discussion with MapUni and EPA: Environmental Technology Innovation and Big Data Collection

On May 27 2015, International Fund for China’s Environment (IFCE) hosted a Chinese delegation from Mapuni Inc. in Washington DC. The event was supported by Foley & Lardner, LLP. Jeremy Schreifels, senior policy analyst from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) joined the meeting and had a discussion with the Chinese delegation on environmental technology exchange between US and China.

At the beginning of the meeting, Mr. Tad Ferris, Vice President of IFCE delivered his welcoming remarks. After that, delegations from Mapuni Inc. and Jeremy did a brief self-introduction. During the technical dialogue, Jeremy explained EPA’s main experience and achievements in air pollution emission data collection, toxic gas emission inventory development and air pollution index. During the discussion, Jeremy repeatedly mentioned automatic monitoring devices and big data analysis and calculation of important applications in environmental protection. After years of groping and experiments, EPA now mainly use the real-time automatic monitoring devices to collect emissions data sources, use a predetermined data detection algorithm to identify the monitoring device and troubleshoot any invalid data, make data analysis and visualization of large data into easy-to-understand information to the public.

Dr. Rui Liu (President of the Institute of Environmental Science of Mapuni Inc.) and Jeremy had in-depth exchange of ideas regarding environmental information collection, management and analysis. This conference ended successfully in Mapuni Inc.’s featured promotion video.

After the meeting, participants immediately followed up with each other at reception, further exchanged their ideas, deepened their understanding and expanded their consensus.
